Michael Philpott - BioI was born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, where I was surrounded by vernacular and modernist architecture without being conscious of it. I attended Memorial University for five years, changed streams at least three times, and graduated in 2012 with a degree in English Language and Literature. While in Newfoundland, I spent much of my free time volunteering with non-profit organizations, working in public engagement and fundraising. My first real exposure to architecture came after being accepted to Dalhousie University's School of Architecture and Planning in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The last two years have been eye-opening, and the amount to take in almost overwhelming. I am excited to take what I have learned and apply it at home and abroad, and I am grateful to the Berkeley Prize for the chance to explore my passions for architecture and the written word.
