Summary

A Compelling Narrative and Anthology: This book isn't just a collection of ideas; it's a compelling narrative anthology that brings to life the stories of how the built world can and should be created, and the profound impact this process has on both architects and the people who use their designs.

Documenting a Groundbreaking Educational Experiment: Discover the documented history of a unique experiment in architectural education. Through the lens of the Berkeley Prize, this book showcases a quarter-century of innovative approaches to teaching and learning about the social art of architecture.

New Perspectives on Architectural Creation: At its heart, the book champions new perspectives in the making of architecture, challenging conventional wisdom and offering fresh insights into how buildings and places can genuinely serve human needs and enhance daily life.

Personal Stories of Impact: Beyond theory, "It's About the People!" delves into personal stories that reveal the transformative effect of people-centered design on creators and users alike, demonstrating how architecture can foster more sensitive and meaningful relationships.

It’s About the People! documents the 25-year history of the international Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Architectural Design Excellence, an annual essay competition and fellowship for undergraduate architecture students. Founded by the late Professor Emeritus Raymond Lifchez at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design, the competition explores architecture as a social art by focusing on the interaction between the built environment and people's daily lives. The Prize has involved submitting essay proposals on varied topics and potentially expanding them into full essays to win cash awards and fellowships that have supported hands-on research experiences throughout the world.
