JUDITH LEE STRONACH UNDERGRADUATE TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP report:  Understanding Elemental’s Incremental Housing Projects

Introduction

The Judith Lee Stronach Undergraduate Travel Scholarships encourage the study of new places, cultures and peoples, as well as commitment to social responsibility. Awarded each summer and winter, the scholarships are open to undergraduate students majoring in architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or sustainable environmental design in the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A.  Read more about the Travel Scholarships and past winners here (link to http://www.ced.berkeley.edu/judith_lee_stronach_travel_scholarships/winners.html).

Like the BERKELEY PRIZE, that is also founded to honor Judith Lee Stronach, the JLS Travel Scholarships reflect the donors’ commitment to U.C. Berkeley and to furthering the broadest range of students’ intellectual growth.  The Winter Scholarships are directed to travel associated with independent research, which may include senior thesis research.  This 2015 report by Julian Daley’s on his experience in Chile describes architecture firm ELEMENTAL’s unique approach to providing opportunities for the poor to participate in creating permanent homes for themselves.

The subject of the report closely parallels the intent of the 2015 BERKELEY PRIZE subject of Architects Confront Poverty.  As such, it is a valuable addition of the growing interest and case studies related to the subject.  We congratulate Julian Daley on his outstanding work.
